Though there are several kind of wines, red wines are the most popular. You may have seen or heard red wine being handed out to women at various parties. This wine type gets its color from the grapes. Typically, red wines are made from grapes that are red or purple in color. This is why they have a deep shade which is not the case with other wines.

Unlike other wines where the skin is removed for fermentation, grapes are fermented with their skin on for red wine. It is because of the skin that red wine achieve a dark color tone. The skin of the grapes not just adds color but also taste to red wine. The skin of grapes contains a substance called tannin which adds flavor to the wine. It is for this reason that red wine tastes better than most wines.

Another category of wines is fortified wines. Amidst various other wines, it is usually the fortified wines that have maximum alcohol content. After the fermentation process, extra alcohol is added to this type of wine. Sometimes, the alcohol content of this wine can exceed 14 %. So, try it only if you can bear with alcohol.

If you like mild flavors then rose wines are the way to go. Like red wines, these too are made from grapes that range from red to purple color. But in the case of rose wines, the skin of the grapes is peeled off before fermentation. Since the skin is peeled off, the wine does not get the deep color as in red wine. This causes the wine to have a pinkish color and only a limited amount of tannin.

Rose wines contain lesser alcohol as compared to other wines, which makes them apt for those who are not too fond of alcohol. Also, these wines have a very delicate flavor, which is why they are not served with very heavy food items.

White wines are yet another popular category of wines. These wines have a much stronger flavor. Not everybody can relish white wine particularly if you do not have a taste for alcohol. These wines make use of grapes that are lighter in color, which is why they get the white color. Also, the skin of grapes is peeled off before fermentation, which makes the taste even stronger.
