There is no doubt in the Europe being the oldest and finest wine making area in the world, however, Romans introduced the art of wine making in the various countries they conquered. The Europeans only mastered the idea to perfection. It is another fact that the Italy makes more amount of wine than any other country and when it comes to quality, the greatest red wines are produced in France.

Wine making is called as wine art in France. Since French believe that wine making is more of an art than just a science, they consider that those who make great wines are like artists who create masterpieces with palettes and oils. Regardless of the fact that there are various factors that contribute to the end result, every maker is able to add their own specified method that would add up to a personal touch in making each of their wines unique. That is why the wines made in France are produced for quality rather than quantity.

Coming to the various kinds of wines, France manufactures a large variety. However, the characteristics of each of the wine produced are determined by the type of the climate, soil, the variety of grape and the date they were picked. The quality of the wine also depends greatly on the type of fermentation vessel that is used and the time period for which the wine is allowed to ferment. The taste of the wine also varies with a variation in the storage of the wine.

There are several other factors that determine the difference among various wines. For instance, if the wine is produced in one area and the grapes produced in some other corner of the country, the wine produced there is bound to be different in taste. These factors are called as 'terroir' by the French.

Some of the greatest varieties of French wines include the reds of Burgundy and Bordeaux, Cote De Rhone, November Nouveaux rush and the Rhone valley. Other than these red wines, France also produces some of the finest white wines like the great whites of Alsace and Loire. Sancerre is probably the most famous wine produce in France.
